Plastic pollution in the ocean

It is amazing how many people never heard of the Great Pacific Garbage patch - at least most of my friends haven’t. Twice the size of Texas, this massive vortex of trash (mostly plastic) is floating around, poisoning the marine life and eventually - our dinner plates. The main problem with plastic is that it doesn’t really biodegrade into the earth matter, water and carbon dioxide. Under the influence of the sun plastic degrades into smaller pieces - consumed by the sea organisms and entering the food chain. Here is a great article on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

What can be done about it?

The first thing would be to change our thinking and realize that every one of us really does make a difference on a global scale. If you don’t think so - try counting the garbage that goes out of your house. You’d be amazed at how much waste one family (or even one individual) can accumulate. Check out this article listing a few simple ways to reduce your plastic pollution.
